Nearby School Mandatory Attendance Issue Not Under Discussion: Municipality Denies Claims

The Education Department of the Yerevan Municipality has sent a survey to school directors to determine the distance students travel from home to school. Margaryt Khachatryan, the head of the Education Department, shared this information in an interview with 24News.

"The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport sent us a similar inquiry, after which we reached out to the school directors. We do not have statistics yet; we are in the process of gathering data. I cannot say why the Ministry needs this information," Khachatryan explained.

When asked about reports suggesting that the municipality is considering a new program to ease congestion in the city, requiring parents to send their children to nearby schools, Khachatryan responded, "No, there are no discussions of such a plan in the municipality. I cannot say whether it would be a realistic program for alleviating congestion, as the law currently allows any parent to choose the school they want to send their child to."
