EU Plans to Expand Frontex Powers and Use of Digital Monitoring Tools

The European Union is discussing a possible amendment to the mandate of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the expansion of its powers. According to Euractiv, citing internal documents, EU countries are considering the inclusion of drone operators, cyber surveillance units, and teams utilizing artificial intelligence for situational monitoring within Frontex.

The review of Frontex's mandate is slated for 2026, as previously announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The issue is included in the EU's work program for 2026.

Currently, Frontex supports EU member states in maintaining external border security, counteracting cross-border crime, collecting information, and assisting in expulsion processes.
