EU Observer Mission to be Invited to Armenia: Kostanyan

The extraordinary session of the National Assembly has commenced, with the agenda focusing on the ratification of the agreement regarding the participation of the Republic of Armenia in the European Union's crisis management operations.

Maria Karapetyan, a member of the Civil Contract faction, addressing the rapporteur of the issue, Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, highlighted for the public the importance of the presence of the EU civilian observer mission in Armenia due to the existence of such an agreement, particularly between the European Union and Canada.

Kostanyan provided details on the process of inviting the EU observer mission to Armenia: “We essentially have the necessary legal framework regarding both the status of the forces and the status of the mission, where the scope of the mandate is defined, which was discussed during the committee meeting. Not only Canada, but also other EU member states have similar agreements with the EU, such as Switzerland, Norway, and others,” he noted.

Kostanyan briefly recalled how the process unfolded in Armenia: “Our country invited the European Union to send a civilian mission, after which the mandate was negotiated, subsequently deployed, and thereafter decisions regarding the involvement of each non-member country in the EU were made.”
