Armenia Seeks Participation in EU Security Initiatives, Says Deputy Foreign Minister
During an extraordinary session of the National Assembly on November 28, the ratification of an agreement between Armenia and the EU, which defines the framework for Armenia's participation in EU crisis management operations, was discussed. The draft was presented by Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, who noted that the document was signed on June 30, 2025.
Kostanyan stated that the agreement sets out the general conditions for Armenia's participation, and the cooperation between Armenia and the EU in the security sector already includes the EU observation mission stationed in Armenia. Currently, there are 20 such missions operating in the EU, established either by UN Security Council resolutions or at the invitation of countries.
In terms of finances, participating states are responsible for their staff expenses; however, the EU has a support mechanism. Armenia has not yet allocated budgetary provisions for these expenditures, as there is no decision on participation in missions, but if necessary, the reserve fund can be utilized.
The deputy minister added that Armenia can respond to the EU's invitation by either confirming or declining participation, while preliminary consultations are ongoing before the official process commences.
