Floods in Thailand: 33 Dead, Millions Affected in Disaster Zone

Record floods in ten southern provinces of Thailand have claimed at least 33 lives. In the city of Hat Yai, a business hub, the strongest rainfall in the last 300 years has been recorded, with 335 mm falling in just one day.

Of the more than two million residents in the disaster zone, only 13,000 have been relocated to shelters, while the rest remain cut off and without necessary assistance.

The Thai armed forces, coordinating relief operations, are preparing to deploy an aircraft carrier dubbed the “floating hospital,” along with 14 small boats for evacuating residents and providing food aid.

Neighboring countries have also been affected by the meteorological disaster; the death toll in Vietnam has reached 98, and over 19,000 people have been evacuated in Malaysia.
