Former Brazilian President Arrested After Months of House Arrest
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested. His lawyer, Celso Vilardi, informed Reuters of the arrest but did not provide specific details regarding the reasons behind it. This marks the end of Bolsonaro's strict house arrest, which lasted for over three months.
In September, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for organizing a coup against the government. According to the charges, his aim was to maintain power after losing to leftist candidate Luis Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 elections.
For more than 100 days, he had been under strict house arrest due to another case concerning violations of his detention conditions. This case was related to allegations of Bolsonaro’s involvement in attempting to halt criminal proceedings against him in the U.S.
