Portugal's Head Coach Comments on Victory Against Armenia
The head coach of the Nations League champions, Roberto Martinez, commented on the 9-1 victory over the Armenian team in the last match of the World Cup qualifying tournament, held at the Dragão Stadium in Porto.
“We played for victory and wanted to leverage the power of our fans as well. We were still feeling the effects of the defeat against Ireland. We couldn’t secure a win against Hungary. It was difficult to overcome all of this psychologically. All of that drove us to have a match like this. I really appreciated the players' response. We saw that our team returned to its best form. The loss in Ireland was not due to technical or tactical issues but had psychological causes. We were afraid of losing,” Martinez's words are quoted by UEFA's website.
Portugal topped Group F and secured a place in the final stage. Ireland won against Hungary with a score of 3-2 in the last round, finishing in second place and will continue to fight for a spot in the playoffs.
