Armenia's National Football Team Appoints Alexander Grigoryan as New Coach
The national football team of Armenia will be led by Russian coach Alexander Grigoryan. According to our sources, the decision to appoint him was made by the President of the Armenian Football Federation, Arthur Vanetsyan, despite the opinions of some members of the federation.
It is reported that Grigoryan was the candidate suggested by the founder of the FC Banants (now FC Urartu), Jevan Cheloyants, and Thomas Grigoryan, the owner of the FC Lori and a member of the HFF Executive Committee.
According to our sources, Vanetsyan made the appointment at their urging, and both HFF Secretary General Armen Melikbekyan and HFF Technical Director, renowned Spanish specialist Gines Melendez, opposed the decision. Additionally, there had been no discussion with Vice President Armen Nikoghosyan regarding this appointment.
There is also information that Grigoryan has already started working with the team. He was at the federation today, dealing with the composition of the national team.
We tried to confirm this information with Nikoghosyan; however, he stated that he knew nothing about it. Earlier today, we attempted to learn the name of the new coach from Melikbekyan, who also had no comment to make, merely noting that in anticipation of the national team's next two matches in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, the HFF department for national teams has already sent invitations to clubs of Armenian football players playing abroad.
The national team has been without a head coach since Armen Gyulbudaghyan resigned on October 18.
