U.S. Stops Paying Local Workers at Military Bases in Europe Due to Shutdown

The partial shutdown of the U.S. federal government has led to the cessation of payments to local workers at American military bases in Europe, according to reports from the Associated Press.

This situation has impacted thousands of European workers who support U.S. bases in Germany, Italy, Portugal, and several other countries. Germany has decided to temporarily cover the salaries, hoping for reimbursement from Washington after the shutdown concludes. However, in several countries, including Italy and Portugal, employees have simply gone without pay.

The shutdown began at midnight on October 1 due to a lack of funding. It occurred after representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties in the U.S. Congress failed to reach an agreement on a variety of spending measures, including those in the healthcare sector.

Experts warn that if funding is not restored in the coming days, serious issues could arise not only affecting base operations but also the implementation of U.S. military cooperation programs.
