Nuclear Safety Situation in Ukraine is Unstable: IAEA Warns

Russian forces have launched strikes on Ukrainian nuclear power plants, specifically targeting the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne substations. This was reported by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on the X social media platform, emphasizing that Russia jeopardizes nuclear safety in Europe. Kyiv has called for the IAEA council to convene.

Earlier, reports indicated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to shell the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. In its statement, the IAEA noted that the situation regarding nuclear safety in Ukraine remains unstable.

The agency's announcement mentioned that both Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants had to reduce production following the attacks on the substations. Director General Rafael Grossi has urged for restraint to prevent incidents with radiological consequences.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the power grid, receiving a backup supply of 330 kV. This marks the first occurrence of such a reconnection in the past six months, as reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
