Hungary Faces Challenges in Moving Away from Russian Oil, Trump Says
U.S. President Donald Trump stated during a meeting at the White House that it is difficult for Hungary to break away from Russian oil and gas supplies due to its geographical location. According to Trump, the country’s lack of access to the sea increases its energy dependency.
"It is complicated for Viktor Orbán to obtain oil and gas from other regions. Hungary is a large country; however, it lacks maritime ports, and that poses a serious problem for them," Trump remarked during a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Earlier, at the end of October, Trump had mentioned that Orbán requested Hungary to be excluded from the sanctions imposed on Russian oil. The U.S. president noted that the issue is still under discussion. Orbán stated that Budapest is trying to convince Washington that its geographical position necessitates a special approach to energy import issues.
