Armenia and India Set to Sign Multibillion-Dollar Defense Agreement
India and Armenia are close to finalizing a multibillion-dollar defense agreement, with a total estimated value of $3.5 to $4 billion, according to sources from Republic World. The document outlines cooperation in the military-industrial sector, emphasizing the modernization of Armenia's air defense, missile systems, and artillery capabilities.
The Indian side is discussing the sale of new-generation Akash-NG surface-to-air missile systems to Armenia. This model has extended range and could become the first line of defense in Armenia’s air defense system. Previously, Armenia had acquired short-range variants of the Akash systems.
Furthermore, the negotiations include the possibility of joint production of BrahMos missiles in Armenia, as well as the supply of a new batch of Pinaka multiple rocket launch systems. The first such delivery was already carried out in 2023.
It should be noted that since 2022, India has become Armenia's main military-industrial partner, supplying anti-tank systems, howitzers, and drone countermeasures. Although official Yerevan has recently announced cuts in military spending, the new negotiations indicate that defense cooperation with India remains a priority direction.
