Smoking Banned in Maldives for Those Born After 2007

The Government of Maldives has approved a new law prohibiting the use of tobacco for all citizens born after January 2007. This makes the Maldives the only country in the world to have such a comprehensive age-based restriction.

The new regulation aims to protect the health of the younger generation and gradually reduce tobacco consumption in the country. The law applies to both traditional tobacco products and electronic cigarettes.

Sales of tobacco products to minors are punishable by a fine of $3,200, while the penalty for selling vape devices is $320. The Ministry of Health of Maldives has stated that this initiative is part of the government's long-term strategy to promote healthy lifestyles within society and reduce the prevalence of tobacco-related diseases.
