Arayik Harutyunyan's Birth Certificate and Passport Under Investigation in Baku Court
In a military court in Baku, the birth certificate and passport of former Artsakh president Arayik Harutyunyan have become the subject of scrutiny. This was reported by 'Azatutyun'.
The Azerbaijani prosecutor specifically questioned Harutyunyan about why his birth certificate states he was born in Stepanakert, Azerbaijan SSR, while his passport lists his birthplace as Armenian SSR. 'Does this imply that Armenia considers Karabakh its territory?' asked state prosecutor Vusal Abdullayev.
According to Azerbaijani state agency 'Azertaj', which provides details on the court session held without independent media and international organizations, Harutyunyan avoided answering the prosecutor's question, stating he had never discussed the issue with Armenian authorities.
Having been imprisoned in Baku for over two years, the former leader of Artsakh also clarified how the passports of Nagorno-Karabakh citizens differed from those of Armenian citizens. He noted that the only distinction was the 070 code.
According to the media outlet, Harutyunyan claimed the 070 code was specifically noted to prevent holders of those passports from participating in elections held in Armenia. Nevertheless, he emphasized that with such passports, residents of Artsakh were able to travel abroad and circulate as citizens of Armenia.
