Results of the Dutch Parliament's Snap Elections Revealed
Following the snap elections in the Netherlands, the centrist Democrats 66 (D66) emerged victorious, surpassing Geert Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) by one seat. D66 now holds 27 mandates in the 150-seat lower house of parliament, while the PVV has 26. The right-wing liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) comes in third with 22 seats.
The 38-year-old leader of D66, Rob Jetten, has the greatest potential to form a governmental coalition and become the country's new Prime Minister. The former Minister of Climate advocates for 'progressive' policies, emphasizing green energy in close cooperation with the European Union. He has stated his intention to construct 10 new cities and believes that reducing bureaucratic obstacles will allow for the annual construction of 100,000 new homes.
On immigration, Jetten has positioned himself as a true centrist, promising to assist legal migrants in their integration.
However, it is expected that D66 will face challenges in forming a coalition. To secure a parliamentary majority, he will need the support of at least 76 out of the 150 representatives. Most of the major parties have announced that they will not support Wilders' party.
