Zakhrova on the Arrest of Vardan Ghukasian

The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakhrova, has commented on the detention of Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasian, stating that this is an internal matter for Armenia. At the same time, she expressed surprise that Ghukasian was charged for allegedly supporting the idea of a unified state with Russia.

Zakhrova noted that it is strange that expressing an opinion about the advantages of cooperation with Russia can be interpreted as a renunciation of sovereignty. According to her, such claims are particularly incomprehensible when the official Yerevan has repeatedly expressed its desire to integrate into the EU.

“It is interesting what opinion the Armenian law enforcement agencies have on this matter. After all, joining the EU implies certain limitations on national sovereignty in the fields of foreign policy, economy, migration, and monetary policy,” Zakhrova said at a press conference.
