Details of the Trump-Xi Meeting
The presidents of the United States and China met in Busan, South Korea. This was the first personal meeting between Trump and Xi since the beginning of Trump's second term. Trump declared in front of cameras that he expects a "very productive meeting." Xi, for his part, mentioned that they have had three phone conversations and exchanged letters within the nine months since Trump took office.
"It is natural for the two leading economies of the world to communicate from time to time," added Xi. He also emphasized that the US and China "need to be friends and partners. This is what history has taught us and what reality demands." Following this, the two leaders proceeded to a closed-door meeting.
Present from the American side were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trade Representative Jameson Greer, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen, Commerce Secretary Howard Latnik, Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles, and US Ambassador to China David Perdue. The Chinese delegation included Foreign Minister Wang Yi, his deputy Ma Zhaoxu, State Council Vice Premier He Lifeng, Chief of Staff Cai Qi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, and the Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission Zheng Shanjun.
