Warning from EU MP: People in Armenia Have Been Prosecuted for Their Opinions, Be Cautious
During a meeting of the Euronest Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy Committee held in Yerevan, Nacho Sánchez Amor, a member of the European Parliament and permanent rapporteur on Turkey, stated that Armenia, as an EU candidate country, must first address its internal issues.
He emphasized that the concern is not only about the closed border with Turkey, but also about what is happening within Armenia in everyday life. “If a person is prosecuted for accepting bribes, that is one thing, but if they are prosecuted for their opinion, for instance, due to a social media post, that is concerning. Be cautious. We know what happens when you start persecuting people for expressing their opinions,” said the MP.
Sánchez Amor also highlighted that the protection of human rights and freedom of speech should become an integral part of Armenia's European path.
