A Major Data Center for Artificial Intelligence to be Established in Armenia

The Ministry of High-Tech Industry announced months ago plans to create a virtual institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI). This platform aims to encourage researchers, startups, research, and educational institutions involved in the AI field.

During a joint session of the National Assembly’s standing committees, Minister of High-Tech Industry Mikayel Hayrapetyan disclosed this while responding to MP Sergey Bagratyan's inquiry regarding the ministry's programs in the AI sector.

“Currently, around 55,000 software engineers are engaged in the technology sector. Our goal is to encourage an ongoing increase in the number of specialists dedicated to AI innovations. We are collaborating with several global technology companies in this direction,” said Hayrapetyan.

He added that, in partnership with the private sector, a major data center for Artificial Intelligence is planned to be established in Armenia with the participation of Firebird company.

“I want to emphasize the memorandum of understanding signed on August 8 between Armenia and the USA concerning the fields of artificial intelligence and the semiconductor industry. This will be the strategic foundation upon which new technological cooperation will be built. We are talking about investments amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars,” the minister noted.

According to Mikayel Hayrapetyan, artificial intelligence is considered a strategic priority for Armenia, and the partnership between the state and the private sector will help the country become one of the technology leaders in the region.
