The president of the National Assembly of Volunteers (EKM) addressed the October 27 events, army issues, and the reduction of mandatory military service duration at the Yerablur military pantheon.

Sasun Mikayelyan stated during a conversation with journalists on October 27 that the failure to uncover the October 27 terrorist attack has deeply impacted the statehood of Armenia. According to him, on that day, not only was the government decapitated, but the very foundation of the state was undermined.

“If Vazgen were alive, such a thing could not happen regarding Artsakh,” emphasized Mikayelyan, highlighting that the complete uncovering of the incident is a matter of national security.

Speaking about the country’s defense, the head of EKM mentioned that “today our top priority is to unite and stand strong next to the army.” He reported that approximately 4,000 volunteers participated in the 44-day war, of which 74 were killed and 113 injured.

Mikayelyan also responded to the government's decision to reduce the mandatory military service duration, stating that it is the government's decision, and he does not wish to comment on whether it is right or wrong. “To have a professional army, we need a healthy youth. Unfortunately, most of our youth are ill and are being discharged from service,” he added.

Referring to the possible reduction of the number of servicemen, Mikayelyan noted, “I do not think that this will pose a danger. What is more important is that we have qualified, professional soldiers. Quality is essential.”
