Germany Sells Fighter Jets to Turkey
Germany has confirmed Turkey's request for the acquisition of 40 units of "Eurofighter" type fighter jets. The decision has sparked a strong reaction in Greece ahead of German Foreign Minister Johan Wadgeler's visit to Ankara.
According to German diplomatic sources, Berlin has given a positive answer, allowing the sale for collective defense purposes within NATO. The Greek press has sharply reacted to Germany's decision, criticizing Berlin for giving the "green light" to Turkey. Local publications have emphasized that this step could escalate tensions in the region. The Greek newspaper "Tribune" has called the decision a "diplomatic defeat" for Greece.
The German government had initially approved Turkey's request for the acquisition of "Eurofighter" jets back in July, which was confirmed by government spokesman Stefan Cornelius.
