General Strike Declared in Belgium
The general strike in Belgium has disrupted public transport services, with numerous bus routes suspended. All outbound flights at the country's two largest airports have been canceled, according to Euronews.
Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Brussels in response to calls from trade unions. The demonstrators oppose the austerity measures proposed by the coalition government led by Bart De Wever. Protesters believe that the government's actions will primarily harm vulnerable groups.
Trade unions are outraged by the proposed pension reforms, plans to reduce night shift compensation, and changes to unemployment benefits.
The protests have mostly remained peaceful, although clashes occurred between protesters and police in Brussels. Tear gas has been used against participants, and law enforcement officials have arrested dozens of individuals. Several have been injured and received medical assistance on-site.
