Nobel Committee Links Peace Prize Laureate Leak to Espionage
The Nobel Committee of Norway is associating the potential leak of information regarding the peace prize laureate with espionage prior to the award announcement. This statement was made by Christian Berg Harpviken, the committee's secretary and the director of the Nobel Institute in Norway.
Concerns were raised following a peculiar trend on betting platforms, where bets sharply increased on the Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado just before the announcement of her winning the prize.
Harpviken emphasized that the situation has not yet been fully clarified but that serious suspicions are already present. He clarified that the Nobel Committee is “constantly confronted” with espionage and takes security very seriously.
The Norwegian newspaper Finansavisen reported on October 10 that Machado was considered an “obvious underdog” among users on Polymarket, but on the night of October 10—literally within a few hours—her odds of winning soared from 3.6% to 70%, making her the favorite. The publication noted that three users on the platform made significant bets on Machado's victory that night and morning, collectively spending over $181,000 on those bets.
