US Prosecutors Have Wiretapped Republican Senators' Phone Conversations
The former special counsel of the US, Jack Smith, who worked during the Capitol building attack in 2021, monitored the personal messages and phone calls of Republican senators. This was reported by Fox News, referencing a document obtained by the television channel from the FBI.
“I am ashamed to stand on the hill of the Capitol and admit that the FBI once had the capability and authority to monitor the personal communications of US officials for political purposes,” said FBI Deputy Director Dan Bonjino, noting that such activities are no longer taking place.
According to the television channel, Smith and his subordinates were able to access the officials' telephone data in 2023, during the presidency of Joe Biden.
Additionally, former President Donald Trump accused the FBI of inciting the attack on the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021.
