Clashes Occur in Aleppo Between Kurdish Forces and Syrian Troops

On Monday evening, fierce clashes erupted in Aleppo between Kurdish forces and Syrian government troops. According to Al Arabia, referencing the Syrian Ministry of Defense, the government is "moving forward with its redistribution plan." The ministry stated, "We are committed to our agreement with the [Syrian Democratic Forces] and do not intend to carry out any military operations."

The Kurdish movement has declared that the clashes are a direct result of "provocations by temporary government groups and their attempts to advance with tanks." The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have played a crucial role in Washington's efforts against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. In March, the U.S. facilitated an understanding between the Kurdish group and the new Syrian government, which previously held opposing sides.

The March agreement stipulated that Kurdish civilian and military structures would integrate with the central government by the end of 2025. Earlier on Monday, a senior U.S. diplomat and a high-ranking commander from the Middle East visited northeastern Syria to meet with the SDF leader.

Following the meeting, SDF leader Mazloum Abdi stated that the Kurds continue to "remain steadfast in their goal to create a united Syria for all Syrians." Earlier, Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara reiterated that the central government would welcome all factions and that "all weapons must be under state control."
