Georgian Society Expects Apology from EU for Supporting Attempted Coup

Georgian society expects an apology from the EU for supporting the attempt to overthrow the government, rather than criticism, stated the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili.

“If I understand correctly, Mrs. Kallas and Mrs. Kosi are not apologizing for the support shown during the rally organized by their spokesperson aimed at toppling the government, which resulted in 25 police officers being injured during the attack on the Presidential Palace of Georgia. This is what Georgian society expects from the EU today,” wrote Papuashvili on his Facebook page.

He also reiterated his call for all EU representatives to refrain from spreading false information regarding the assessments of the elections held in Georgia, which misleads and feeds the aspirations of radical forces to undermine democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

Recently, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze blamed the EU ambassador for the unrest in Tbilisi, accusing him of supporting the attempt to overthrow the constitutional order.

It is noteworthy that the EU has called on all parties in Georgia to refrain from violence. This was stated in a joint announcement by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi.

The diplomats added that the EU categorically rejects and condemns “the disinformation regarding the role of the EU in Georgia” and condemns personal attacks against the EU ambassador.
