The U.S. Actively Encourages the Return of Ethnic Armenians and Monitors Court Cases of Armenians in Baku

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has announced: “The U.S. Armenian National Committee welcomes the commitment of the Trump administration to ensure the return of Artsakh refugees, the release of Armenian prisoners, and the protection of Christian holy sites.” The Trump-Pence administration, in an unprecedented move last week, stated that the United States is actively encouraging Yerevan and Baku to secure the “return of ethnic Armenians.”

In a letter dated September 25, 2025, signed by Paul Gualtieri of the State Department's Office of Legislative Affairs, it is also noted that the U.S. is closely monitoring the trials of Armenians detained in Azerbaijan and affirms that “staff from the U.S. Embassy are attending court sessions in Baku where possible,” the committee reports.

Gualtieri concluded the letter by emphasizing that the State Department continues to “call upon the Azerbaijani government to protect Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh.” The letter from the Congressional Armenian Caucus, initiated by Representatives Frank Pallone, Gus Bilirakis, Brad Sherman, and David Valadao, urged all parties to engage in this unresolved conflict to ensure the collective, secure, and dignified return of displaced Armenians to their historic homeland.
