The Russian-Ukrainian War Will Lead to Disaster for Georgia, President Says

The war between Russia and Ukraine will result in disaster for Georgia, President Mikheil Saakashvili stated in an interview with Responsible Statecraft.

The publication recalled that tensions between Tbilisi and Brussels escalated in 2022 when the Georgian government ignored Western pressure to provide military assistance to Kyiv and to impose a wide range of sanctions against Moscow.

“The West demanded that we start a war with Russia, which would have contradicted our vital national interests. This would lead to the same consequences as in 2008 when the reckless actions of the then-government, based on confidence in NATO, brought Georgia to disaster,” he said.

Last week, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated that foreign intelligence services are attempting to finance protests in the republic, following the example of Ukraine's Maidan. He emphasized that the authorities will not allow the development of such a scenario but promised to ensure the maintenance of law and order during the rallies.
