Jalal Harutyunyan to be Transferred to Correctional Institution as Appeal is Rejected
The Supreme Court of Armenia has rejected the appeals of Jalal Harutyunyan, the former commander of the Artsakh Defense Army, and his defender regarding the decision on his case. According to Datalex, based on the decision made by the Supreme Court on September 26, he will soon be transferred to a correctional institution.
Earlier, it was reported that Jalal Harutyunyan had filed a new appeal, demanding the annulment of the verdict against him and a ruling for his acquittal. It is noteworthy that Jalal Harutyunyan has been sentenced to 5.5 years in prison. This decision by the first instance court was appealed at the Court of Cassation, with the accused party allegedly attempting to delay hearings at the Court of Cassation to escape responsibility based on the statute of limitations, according to the victims.
However, on June 18, the Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Mkhitar Papoyan, upheld the verdict of the first instance court of Syunik Province regarding Jalal Harutyunyan. Consequently, the decision of the Court of Appeals was appealed to the Supreme Court, which rejected it.
Jalal Harutyunyan is accused of issuing a wrong command. Law enforcement officials assert that as a result of his actions, 20 soldiers from the Tsor military unit came under enemy fire and were killed, with the military unit subsequently coming under Azerbaijani control.
