Why Samvel Karapetyan Was Transferred from Armavir Prison to NSS Isolation

When businessman-philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan was unexpectedly transferred from Armavir Correctional Institution to the NSS isolation, significant events preceded this situation. This is reported by the newspaper ‘Zhoghovurd’.

According to the newspaper's sources, an incident that occurred in Armavir Prison was the reason for this unexpected transfer. Specifically, convict Arman Arakelyan, known by the nickname ‘Goj,’ who is serving time for killing an Azerbaijani in Russia, decided to start a hunger strike right in Armavir prison in support of philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan. It is noteworthy that his sons are also currently imprisoned in connection with the murder case of 22-year-old Pargev Hakobyan in Ejmiatsin.

To avoid possible hunger strikes and solidarity from prisoners around Samvel Karapetyan, it was decided to transfer him from Armavir Penitentiary. The Yerevan-Center correctional facility operates under a comparatively stricter regime, thus reducing the likelihood of an internal rebellion under the businessman's protection, while the situation at Armavir Prison could escalate beyond control.

According to the newspaper's information, it is currently known only that Samvel Karapetyan has been moved to another isolation unit, and the details of the explosive situation created at Armavir Prison are still being investigated by law enforcement agencies.

Let us remind you that on June 18, 2025, Samvel Karapetyan was charged under Part 2 of Article 422 of the RA Criminal Code. This concerns public calls directed at seizing power, violating territorial integrity, renouncing sovereignty, or violently overthrowing the constitutional order, which were made via mass media or information technologies.
