Hungary Urges Ukraine to Surrender Portions of Its Territory
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Levente Magyar, has suggested that Ukraine should concede one-fifth of its territory in exchange for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. His comments were reported by the Telex portal.
“I do not want to tell Ukraine what to do; I am simply saying that based on our experience, peace can sometimes come at a painful cost,” he said.
Magyar compared Ukraine's situation to that of Hungary at the end of World War I when Budapest had two options: “either take up arms or agree to the terms of peace, even if that meant losing two-thirds of the country's territory.”
The Secretary of State noted that his country's authorities made the only right, albeit difficult, decision at that time, to maintain at least one-third of Hungary's territory, and he believes that is what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should do now.
