UN Security Council Fails to Delay Restoration of Sanctions Against Iran
The UN Security Council has failed to adopt a proposal put forth by Russia and China that aimed to delay the restoration of sanctions against Iran. The draft resolution garnered support from Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia. In contrast, the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Greece, and several other countries opposed it.
According to the UN press service, the proposal was submitted in response to earlier recommendations from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to restore anti-Iranian sanctions that had been suspended after the 2015 nuclear agreement. London, Paris, and Berlin have accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons.
Prior to the vote, Russia's deputy permanent representative at the UN accused the European and American sides of provoking escalation. The British representative stated that Tehran does not respect the global non-proliferation regime for nuclear weapons, while assuring that they are ready for diplomatic resolution.
Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that the current situation is a consequence of the West's failures. According to Abbas Araghchi, the United States has betrayed diplomacy, while the European trio has buried it.
