Syrian Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Former President Bashar Assad

A Syrian court has issued an arrest warrant for the country's former president, Bashar Assad. This was reported by the SANA news agency.

According to the statement, "An in absentia arrest warrant for Bashar Assad has been issued related to charges stemming from events in Daraa in 2011."

At the end of November 2024, armed groups of the Syrian opposition launched a large-scale attack on positions of the Syrian army, and by December 8, they entered Damascus. Bashar Assad subsequently vacated the presidency of Syria and left the country. On January 29, the new head of the Syrian administration, Ahmad al-Sharaa, was announced as the President of the Syrian transitional period.
