UN Vote on Iran Does Not Place Obligations on Countries, Says Russia's Foreign Ministry

The results of the discussion regarding the draft resolution on the restoration of sanctions against Iran at the United Nations Security Council do not impose any obligations on member states of the organization, stated the Russian diplomatic mission following a meeting between Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and diplomats from three EU countries.

The ministry announced that the meeting addressed the situation related to the illegal attempts to reactivate mechanisms for the restoration of previously lifted Security Council sanctions against Iran by European countries participating in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The Russian side emphasized that Great Britain, Germany, and France lack the legal basis and procedural capability for such actions, according to the diplomatic commentary.

Moreover, it was highlighted that the results of the discussion on the draft resolution on the restoration of sanctions against Iran on September 19 at the UN Security Council, due to their legal invalidity, do not impose any obligations on UN member states and cannot serve as a basis for any practical steps regarding sanctions against Tehran in connection with its nuclear program, the Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed.
