Syrian Refugees Forced to Leave the U.S. as Law Changes
Syrian refugees are forced to leave the U.S. The Trump administration has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for migrants from Syria. The announcement was made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Under the Temporary Protected Status program, Syrian citizens residing in the U.S. are required to voluntarily leave the country within 60 days. They are offered a special application through customs services that enables participation in a 'safe and secure self-deportation' program. This program includes free airline tickets, $1,000 in compensation, and the opportunity to legally immigrate to the U.S.
The department emphasized that after the 60-day period, all Syrians who do not take advantage of the voluntary departure program will be detained and forcibly deported. They will be permanently barred from entering the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates that more than 6,000 Syrians currently hold special status that allows them to live and work legally in the country, but does not provide a pathway to permanent residency or citizenship.
