After Alen Simonyan, Haik Sargsyan will target Andranik Kocharyan
RA National Assembly My Step faction deputy Haik Sargsyan is set to target fellow faction member Andranik Kocharyan following his confrontation with National Assembly President Alen Simonyan. This shift comes amidst the already tense relationship between Sargsyan and Kocharyan, which has been fraught for a considerable time. During committee meetings, they have frequently clashed publicly, with the last straw being Kocharyan's refusal to give a positive conclusion for Sargsyan's legislative initiative regarding the 'liberation from military service'.
On June 13, during the National Assembly's permanent committee on defense and security, when Sargsyan presented his project, Kocharyan urged him to withdraw the package from the agenda. Their heated argument resulted in Kocharyan's committee giving a negative conclusion on the project. Since that moment, the conflict between Kocharyan and Sargsyan has deepened.
However, Sargsyan's behavior is perplexing for several reasons. Firstly, he is considered one of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's closest deputies. Not only does he frequently participate in various events with the Prime Minister, but he is also a constant presence at pro-collective initiatives. Secondly, when Sargsyan accuses Simonyan of serving business interests through friendly ties, he is well aware that similar allegations could be directed at Deputy Hrachya Hakobyan, as well as My Step members Haik Tsiranyan, Sisak Gabrielyan, and others. These individuals have also supported Simonyan’s business-interest-serving positions through the same circles.
As a result, Alen Simonyan remains not only protected by his teammates but also becomes more aggressive.
Nevertheless, the story does not end with the Simonyan-Sargsyan conflict. Newspaper sources confidently assert that this conflict will soon enter a new phase, as Haik Sargsyan plans to target Andranik Kocharyan as well. It is worth noting that Kocharyan is linked to various unexplained issues with 'Avangard Motors' LLC, and he has often conspired against his rivals within party circles. Sources emphasize that in the next 'round', we may witness a clash between 'Haik Sargsyan and Andranik Kocharyan'.
Despite Kocharyan's attempts to strengthen his positions through the 'committee studying the circumstances of the 44-day war' report and his recent move to join the My Step party officially, party circles are confident that his song is sung. Andranik Kocharyan has no place in the future My Step team.
In the meantime, neither of the conflicting parties intends to remove any of the other from My Step for now. Moreover, on September 20, both Haik Sargsyan and Alen Simonyan are expected to be elected as members of the administration. However, their contradictions will not only persist but will continue in various formats. Especially since there is already a problem inside— the next candidate for the National Assembly presidency from My Step should in no case be Alen Simonyan.
In this context, another name is increasingly being mentioned: Lilit Makunts. Having returned from the USA, she has been appointed chief advisor to the Prime Minister and is reportedly waiting patiently for her possible time. It is not excluded that the actions aimed at undermining Alen Simonyan's positions are being sponsored by Pashinyan himself.
In short, within My Step, former enemies are turning into allies, while current allies may become each other's most dangerous opponents in the future. This political dynamic indicates only one thing: lasting peace within the party is unlikely to be restored for a long time. The struggle for positions and the coveted spots on the electoral list for the 2026 elections has turned teammates against one another.
