The United States is experiencing a wave of political violence that has reached its highest level since the 1960s. Over the past five years, there has been a record number of assassination attempts and killings of political figures, raising alarming signals for American democracy. This is reported by Bloomberg.

An analysis conducted by the publication revealed that since the beginning of 2021, there have been five assassination attempts or killings of politicians, including two attacks on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2024. This statistic is particularly significant in light of the recent killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah.

Analysts Welch and Qwik note in their study that while the reasons behind this phenomenon are unclear, a key contributing factor to its rise is the "intensification of political polarization."

“Political violence is the antithesis of a healthy democracy,” the analysts stated. According to data from the UCLA Voteview Institute in Los Angeles, the ideological distance between representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties in Congress has significantly increased since World War II.
