Any type of trade with Russia must be halted, says US Congressman
US Congressman Joe Wilson has announced that he has introduced a bill to extend the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which restricts bilateral trade concerning Russia. "I have introduced a bill to restore the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which halts any trade with Russia," the politician wrote on his X page.
Wilson added that he believes it would be wrong to revoke the amendment. The Congressman noted that his proposal was prompted by assertions from Polish authorities regarding the destruction of several objects considered to be unmanned aerial vehicles.
It is worth mentioning that the Jackson-Vanik amendment was enacted in the United States in 1974. It linked the regulation of bilateral trade to issues concerning Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. Following the collapse of the USSR, the amendment continued to apply to several post-Soviet republics. It remained in force concerning Russia until 2012. Subsequently, it was nullified, but the United States enacted the so-called "Magnitsky Act," legislation that intended to impose sanctions on Russian officials attributed by the American side to human rights violations.
