Will the Armenian Border Guard Check Azerbaijanis' Passports? Khmoyan Questions Pashinyan

The customs border control at the borders of Armenia will be modernized to correspond with the 21st century. This was announced by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a Q&A session with the government in the National Assembly, responding to a question from Agnessa Khmoyan, a member of the "Armenia" faction.

The MP asked Pashinyan whether, in the case of unblocking infrastructure, would the Armenian border guard check the passports of Azerbaijanis, or would the Armenian customs officer inspect the cargo of Azerbaijanis? Additionally, if Azerbaijanis commit a crime on that route, would our patrols be able to intervene or not?

In response, Pashinyan stated, "There cannot be a border without a border guard. It's like asking whether that territorial integrity will be defined by land, water, or carbon dioxide. An area is an area. Crossing the border at an unauthorized location is already a violation of the border." The Prime Minister noted that in many countries, their border guards do not check the passports of persons entering their territories since this is done by a device. He cited the borders of Armenia with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Iran, and the airport, where such regulations should apply for both our citizens and foreigners.
