After the 5:0, they applauded us, and I understood the deep meaning of it. Yeghishe Melikyan
In a post-match press conference, Armenia's national team head coach Yeghishe Melikyan summarized the match, reports ArmSport.am.
“The final is always the hardest question in football. Nevertheless, I am satisfied; the two goals brought us victory. I do not want to think about the goals we failed to score. I don’t want to single anyone out; I will speak about the overall defense. The defenders did an immense amount of work. After the 5:0, they applauded us, and I understood the deep meaning of it. Many thought that I wasn't sad, but I was positive because I am the head coach of the national team. I haven't slept in a few days so we could bring joy to our fans. Criticizing is the easiest thing to do.
I do not want to artificially inflate the value of victory, but this is a very significant step forward. We will have tough games in the future as well, but we will work to solve those problems game by game. We completely changed our strategy compared to the match against Portugal. I wanted to deliver a surprise, and we did that today. I will not allow the players’ vigilance to weaken. We need to work long and hard to achieve stability.
I am very grateful to the players who came on as substitutes, who entered and fought until the end. In the locker room, I said, ‘Our nation needs victories; let’s take that responsibility upon ourselves and give our nation that victory,’” Melikyan stated.
