Japan's Prime Minister Officially Announces Resignation

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced on Sunday that he intends to resign. This surprising move came just a day before his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was set to decide on holding a presidential election.

During a press conference, Ishiba cited that his government had "reached a significant milestone" in tariff negotiations with the United States as a reason for his resignation. He also acknowledged he bears responsibility for the LDP's defeat in the upper house elections held in July.

This decision followed a meeting that took place on Saturday evening between Ishiba and former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, along with Minister of Agriculture Shinjiro Koizumi, both of whom are close allies of Ishiba. It is believed they attempted to persuade him to avoid a rift within the LDP.

According to sources close to Ishiba, who took office in October 2024, he had expressed a willingness to face any efforts to conduct a leadership competition within the LDP, even threatening to dissolve the House of Representatives and call for early elections. This stance has led to negative reactions within the party.

Polls conducted by the media indicated that over 50 percent of respondents believed Ishiba's resignation was unnecessary. However, political analysts suggest that the increasing calls for the LDP to hold a presidential race ultimately compelled him to step down.
