Pressure Must Be Applied to Russia, Says German Foreign Minister
German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul has urged India to pressure its close ally Russia to return to peace negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine, as reported by the Associated Press. This call comes just days after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a regional summit in China.
Wadephul stated at a press conference today that despite significant efforts from Europe and the United States, Russia has shown no willingness to negotiate, and that New Delhi could help resolve the issue. “The only demand is for the guns to go silent,” he said during his two-day visit to India, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a desire to establish peace.
“We Europeans are doing everything, in cooperation with our American and Ukrainian friends, to bring this war to a swift end and for Ukraine to find peace as a sovereign state,” noted the German foreign minister.
