Azerbaijan's Underground Freshwater Resources Decrease

Azerbaijan's underground freshwater resources have decreased, and the flow rate of the Kura River has diminished. This was announced by the head of the state service for the use and protection of water resources, Rafik Verdiyev.

“The underground freshwater reserves in the republic have decreased from 10 to about 8 billion cubic meters. Currently, the underground freshwater reserves amount to 8.4 billion cubic meters, while the total volume of renewable freshwater reaches 26.2 billion cubic meters,” noted the head of the department.

“However, the loss of water from natural sources reaches 25%,” Verdiyev stated. Over the last third of the century, the flow volume of the Kura River, which is Azerbaijan's main water resource, has decreased by 9%. The most significant reduction was observed this summer, amounting to 19%.
