Trump and Zelensky to Meet in Paris
On September 4, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his European counterparts in Paris. This was reported by The Financial Times.
According to the publication, the meeting will take place at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. Expected attendees include German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The Elysée Palace has declined to comment on the upcoming negotiations.
The meeting will follow up on discussions that began at the summit held in Washington on August 18, where long-term support for Kyiv was discussed. As per FT, von der Leyen stated that the EU has a “fairly precise plan” for deploying troops in Ukraine after a ceasefire, as well as finding new funding sources for the Ukrainian army. She noted that the United States guarantees its military presence as part of its support for Ukraine’s security.
Recall that on August 18, Trump welcomed the Ukrainian President to the White House. During their conversation, the American leader promised Ukraine support for resolution efforts, expressing hope for an immediate restoration of peace. After concluding discussions with the Ukrainian side, Trump met with the European delegation. That night, he called Russian President Vladimir Putin to inform him about the progress of the negotiations with Zelensky and European leaders.
