Russia's Proposal to Armenia: Maria Zakharova

Russia is ready to offer Armenia various options for the development of nuclear energy, ranging from small modular reactors to the construction of a new large plant based on proven and reliable technologies. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“We see the interest of the Armenian side in continuing cooperation in the peaceful atom sector. For half a century, since the establishment of the Metsamor nuclear power plant, our specialists have supported close exchanges of experience,” Zakharova emphasized.

According to her, currently, “Rosatom” is working with Armenia to extend the operation of the existing plant until 2036, as well as discussing the prospects for constructing new energy blocks. “The Russian side understands that Armenia approaches this issue substantively, assessing all possible options. The leadership of Rosatom maintains regular contact with the government of the country,” added the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Zakharova also noted that Russia registers the attempts of Western countries' “malicious actors” to discredit Russian-Armenian cooperation in the nuclear sector. In particular, false claims are being circulated in the media about an imminent breakdown or serious threat posed by the nuclear power plant, allegedly threatening the region.
