Leaked Report: Azerbaijan Shot Down 11 Armenian Drones Using Belarusian Weapons in 44-Day War
The sale of weapons to Azerbaijan has strained relations between Armenia and Belarus, which are considered partners within the framework of the CSTO. For years, Armenian officials have publicly expressed outrage over Belarus selling arms and ammunition to Azerbaijan, which has been engaged in a long-standing military conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The investigative outlet "Hetq" presents certain secret letters regarding military cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan from "Polonez" to "Optima" – newly leaked documents about Belarus-Azerbaijan military trade.
Leaked internal circulation documents from Belarus show that some Belarusian weaponry was used by Azerbaijan in 2020 against Armenian military personnel in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian government is particularly concerned about Belarus selling weapons to its enemy, as both countries are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) led by Russia.
Despite being part of the same alliance, the Belarusian private company "Tetraedr" reportedly helped Azerbaijan upgrade its air defense systems, according to emails and internal reports leaked from the company. One internal report from "Tetraedr" states that Azerbaijan's upgraded air defense systems were "actively used" during the 44-day war in 2020.
The report mentions that the "Pechora-2TM" surface-to-air missile systems (a modernized version of the Soviet "S-125") shot down 11 Armenian drones. According to the report, downings were attributed to systems with factory numbers 3 (destroyed 3 drones), 2 (destroyed 2 drones), 28 (destroyed 3 drones), and 11 (destroyed 3 drones).
We requested confirmation or denial from the Armenian Ministry of Defense regarding the information related to the downing of 11 Armenian drones by the "Pechora-2TM". We also inquired how many "Pechora-2TM" systems the Armenian side has taken out of service during recent escalations. Citing state secrecy, the Ministry of Defense did not provide any information.
