Exclusively the Result of Political Persecution: Aho Vardevanyan on Samuel Karapetyan’s Arrest
Without any legal grounds, exclusively as a result of political persecution, Samuel Karapetyan has been unlawfully detained for about 70 days. This was stated by lawyer Aho Vardevanyan on his Facebook page.
“Since June 18, 2025, Samuel Karapetyan has been unlawfully detained simply for defending the Mother See in an interview. The complaint against the Anti-Corruption Court's decision to extend the clearly unlawful detention was allocated for a long time to Judge J. Meliksetyan of the Court of Appeals. I find it necessary to remind that recently the Anti-Corruption Chamber of the Court of Cassation recorded a violation of rights due to the extension of detention and adopted a precedent-setting decision, according to which the principle of minimum standards in criminal procedure requires the application of alternative measures of restraint. Moreover, the Constitutional Court's decision of August 4, 2025, for the first time, directly quoted decisions from the European Court of Human Rights, stating that the presumption should always favor the release of the detained person,” wrote Aho Vardevanyan.
