Italy Opposes Sending Peacekeepers but Will Support Demining Efforts in Ukraine

The Italian government, continuing to oppose sending its peacekeepers to Ukraine, is prepared to provide support for demining efforts in the area and waters, reports the newspaper 'Repubblica.'

“As it became known from qualified sources, in recent days, Giorgia Meloni's government has informed its allies of its willingness to send naval and land forces specialists to carry out mandatory demining operations in Ukraine's waters and territory,” the article states.

This refers to “theoretical preparedness,” which could be realized after the signing of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

'Repubblica' points out that considering the anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, as well as unexploded ordnance, the demining could affect 30% of Ukraine's territory. Italy could send necessary demining boats and support frigates. Additionally, it may use its military specialists to carry out similar tasks in mined areas, the newspaper reports.

“We do not support sending troops, but we can make a significant contribution given our extensive experience in both maritime and land demining. We will see how things proceed. Progress has been made in coordinating such proposals,” said Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani at a political event held in Rimini.
