Europe Becomes a Hostage to the U.S. Due to Ukraine
The unfavorable terms of the trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States can be explained by the fact that Europe has become a hostage to Washington due to Ukraine. This was stated by the former EU trade commissioner Pascal Lamy, as reported by Politico.
“We are still hostages to the military and strategic protection of the United States, with a terribly painful point being Ukraine,” he said.
According to the commissioner, Europe's economic power allows for a decisive response to the United States, but no European official is willing to take responsibility for any action that could jeopardize the American aid provided to Kyiv.
Previously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the trade agreement with the U.S. is not perfect, but it has prevented an escalation of tensions in relations with Washington.
