EU President May Run for German Presidency
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is considering the possibility of nominating European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the position of President of Germany in the 2027 elections, according to Spiegel.
During Germany's open government day on Sunday, Merz hinted that a woman might be elected as the country's president in 2027. According to the publication, he envisions Ursula von der Leyen for this position.
Although von der Leyen was reelected as the head of the European Commission in 2024 and her mandate will only be halfway completed by 2027, the presidency of Germany could represent an attractive conclusion to her political career.
Von der Leyen's candidacy as the first female president for the CDU would be an important step for Merz.
